History
Brief: |
Goshen was part of the Western Lands (Goshen, Colebrook, Kent, Hartland, Norfolk, Canaan, Cornwall, Salisbury, Sharon, Torrington, Barkhamsted, Harwinton, Winchester and New Hartford) made over to Hartford and Windsor in 1686 to save them from being taken by the Royal Gov. Andros. This conveyance was for safekeeping and the lands were to be held for the disposal of the Colony. Nevertheless in May 1722, the Court found that several persons had laid out lands north, east and west of Litchfield without permission and prosecutions were ordered. The disagreement ran until October 1737. The inhabitants wanted a town named New Bantam but the Court ordered the land be auctioned at New Haven and the town called Goshen. The town of Goshen was organized at the home of Deacon John Buel in Litchfield on the 27th and 28th of September 1737. Town vital records begin 1700. Barbour collection records cover 1739-1854. |
