History
Brief: |
Settled in 1654; it was called Paugasuck by the Indians and Paugassett by the settlers.
The town lies at the junction of the Housatonic and Naugatuck rivers about eight miles from New Haven. Capt. John Wakeman of New Haven established a trading house there as early as 1642. The Paugassett settlers offered to join with the Milford plantation in 1657 but were rejected. Men from Milford and Stratford purchased land from the Indians and the Paugassett plantation was accepted by the General Court at Harford on 13 May 1675 and named Derby. Originally included the present towns of Oxford, Birmingham, Ansonia and Seymour. Town vital records begin 1655. Barbour collection records cover 1655-1852.
