History Brief:
Roger Ludlow noted the possibilities of this area when he passed by during the Pequot War of 1636. Settlement began in 1639 and the area was known by its Indian name, Pequonock until 1694 and then Fairfield Village until 1701, and then changed by the General Court to Stratfield. The business section was known as New Pasture Point and officially named Newfield in 1777. The name, Bridgeport, arrived by a process of evolution because of three bridges crossing the river and because by 1800 the area had developed into a lively port. Town Birth records begin 1847. Marriage records begin 1833. Death records begin 1847. Barbour collection records cover 1821-54.

Name:Only In Bridgeport - An illustrated history of the Park City (2nd Edition)
Author:Lennie Grimaldi
Date Published:1993
Publisher:Harbor Publishing (Bridgeport CT)
Description:In Only in Bridgeport: An Illustrated HIstory of the Park City, author Lennie Grimaldi's fascinating and informed narrative, beautifully illustrated with 150 historical photographs and twenty-four pages of color photography gathered by picture researcher Neil Swanson, the story of an exciting ethnic city emerges. Grimaldi weaves the tale of this city's crucial role in the world's first fitted corset.

Bridgeport's role as the industrial and armament center of the nation grew from its growing emergence as a magnet city for the immigrating disillusioned from the far side of the world. These people added immeasurably to Bridgeport's mind an dmuscle as the brass, machine tool, and electrical industries took hold in the mid-nineteenth century. Grimaldi's colorful text and Swanson's memorable collection of images detail a more recent struggle between politicians, police, and organized crime, an dhighlight a heartening success story as townspeople feverishly worked to rebuild a burned facility in time for a Christmas celebration for the city's impoverished children.
