Land in the northern section of this town was part of that called, Mohegan Hunting Grounds, that covered part of Colchester. The southern section was included in a land deed in 1669 to William Lord of Lyme. In 1725 the inhabitants of the north end of Lyme on the north side of Eight Mile River and those living at the south end of Haddam East Society formed the Parish of New Salem. When the town was incorporated in May 1819, taking land from Colchester, Lyme and Montville, it was named Salem. Town vital records begin 1819. Barbour collection records cover 1836-1852.
