Andover was primarily settled on 500 acres of land granted on May 14, 1663 to Major John Mason for his service in the Pequot War. The land was called Pomakuck by the Indians and was not seriously occupied until 1718, when families from Windsor and Enfield moved there. The privileges of an Ecclesiastical Society were granted in May 1747. The town was incorporated in 1848, taking land from the towns of Coventry, Lebanon and Hebron. Town vital records begin 1848. Barbour collection records cover 1848-79.
